Yep, this post’s going to be on writing. Who knew a writer’s website would focus on writing? Weird, write right?

I’m writing this post on a sheet of paper.

That may not mean much (or make much sense), but it will shortly. I hope.

I’ll begin this post by calling myself a hypocrite. Why, you ask?

Some people learn better by looking at examples. Why shouldn’t learning what makes a query right and what makes a query so very, very wrong be any different? It should be noted that writing a good query letter is a constant learning process. In fact, even some famous writers can’t write a query to save their life. There’s a reason: queries are hard.

This is the first of a two post series about query letters from the perspective of a writer getting an insider’s look at a literary agency.

Since I’m learning so much about writing and marketing and selling written works up here in good ‘ol Whidbey Island, WA, it might be time to do a short little post series on what I’m learning so far.

Stephen King once said that to be a good writer you have to read a lot.

Well, duh.

So what makes you care about a novel?

And I don’t mean, my-friend-gave-me-this-to-read-so-I-feel-obligated-to-read-it-because-I-care-about-them.

We send out query letters!

That’s right, we just can’t get enough of good old-fashioned rejection, can we?

Contrary to popular belief I have gotten some writing done.  I finished the hand written draft of my novel and am in the process of typing it.

Since attending the DFW Writers Conference I have been in deep preparation and planning for my next novel.
